What GSM actually measures

GSM stands for grams per square metre: cut out one square metre of the fabric, weigh it, and the number of grams is the GSM. In practice mills punch a standard 100 cm² disc with a circular cutter and multiply, which is why the figure on a spec sheet is exact rather than rounded.

GSM tells you weight and density, nothing more. It does not tell you the fibre (polyester vs cotton), the knit structure (interlock vs mesh), or the finish (moisture-wicking or plain), and all three change how a jersey performs. Two 150 GSM fabrics can behave very differently. Football jerseys are 100% polyester for two reasons: sweat handling and printing. Polyester fibre absorbs under 1% of its weight in water, so sweat spreads across the surface and evaporates instead of soaking in; a moisture-wicking finish speeds up that spreading. Cotton absorbs around 7-8% of its weight, which is why a cotton shirt gets heavy and clings during play.

The printing reason is dye-sublimation. Sublimation dye bonds into polyester fibre at around 200°C, becoming part of the fabric rather than a layer on top, which is what allows unlimited colours, gradients and all-over designs with no fade, crack or peel.
