GRS-Certified Recycled Polyester for Sportswear

In short: GRS-certified recycled polyester is available on request from ZipaSports for any polyester-based garment, run at the same GSM as the standard fabric: 140–180 GSM jerseys, 160–200 GSM piqué polos, 240–300 GSM performance fleece and 600D bag fabric. It takes sublimation exactly as virgin polyester does. Chain-of-custody certificate copies are available on request. Made in Sialkot, Pakistan; MOQ 20–25 pieces per design.

What GRS-certified recycled polyester is

Recycled polyester is polyester filament spun from reclaimed PET, mostly post-consumer drinks bottles and post-industrial polyester waste, that has been sorted, cleaned, melted and re-extruded into yarn; the yarn is then knitted or woven into the same fabric constructions as virgin polyester. In the trade it is sold as rPET, and in a finished football shirt or gym top it is not distinguishable from virgin polyester by look or hand.

GRS stands for the Global Recycled Standard, a voluntary international standard owned by Textile Exchange. It does two things a buyer cares about: it verifies that the recycled content claimed in a fabric is real, and it tracks that content through every processing stage, from the recycler to the spinner, the knitter, the dyer and the garment factory, so the claim on the finished garment can be traced back to its source.

ZipaSports in Sialkot, Pakistan, offers GRS-certified recycled polyester on request for any polyester-based garment in its range. It is not the default fabric; a buyer asks for it at enquiry and the fabric is sourced against that order.

What the GRS standard covers

The GRS covers more than the percentage of recycled fibre; it is a chain-of-custody standard with social, environmental and chemical requirements attached to every certified site. The table summarises what each part means for a sportswear buyer.

GRS elementWhat it requiresWhat it means for your order
Recycled contentVerified recycled input, with a minimum share for certification and a higher share to carry the GRS label on a productThe recycled percentage on your hang tag is checked, not estimated
Chain of custodyEach site handling the material holds a scope certificate; each sale between sites is covered by a transaction certificateTraceability from recycler to your finished garment
Social requirementsWorker rights and conditions at certified sitesAligns with the BSCI audit already held by the factory
Environmental requirementsManagement of water, energy, waste and emissions at certified sitesSupports a brand's environmental reporting
Chemical restrictionsRestricted substances in processing of the certified materialComplements OEKO-TEX Standard 100 fabric testing

Certificate copies for the recycled fabric used in an order are available on request; certificate numbers are not published on the website. Other certifications the factory holds are listed on the certifications page.

Recycled equivalents for every standard polyester fabric

A recycled polyester garment is run at exactly the same GSM, knit construction and finish as its standard equivalent; only the source of the polyester yarn changes. The table maps the standard fabric range to the recycled version ZipaSports can source on request.

Cotton-polyester fleece at 280–350 GSM can use recycled polyester for its polyester share only; nylon-spandex, seamless nylon-elastane and cotton gi fabrics are not polyester and are outside the scope of this page. The full standard range is on the fabrics overview.

Sublimation and decoration on recycled polyester are identical

Sublimation printing works on recycled polyester exactly as it does on virgin polyester, because the dye bonds to the polyester polymer at roughly 200 °C and the polymer is the same whether it came from a bottle or from a new resin. Colour range, gradients, all-over coverage, printed names and numbers and wash-fastness are unchanged, and the print still cannot crack, peel or fade the way a surface print can.

The other decoration methods are also unchanged. Screen printing, multi-head embroidery, DTF transfer, heat transfer vinyl and tackle twill are applied to the finished fabric and do not depend on the yarn's origin. Woven neck labels, printed size tags and hang tags are attached in the same way, which is where the recycled claim itself is printed.

ZipaSports runs the same in-line and final QC on recycled fabric as on standard fabric: wash-fastness and colour-fastness checks on sublimated panels, measurement checks against the approved size specification and pre-shipment photos on request. The dye sublimation page covers the print process; the polyester interlock page covers the most common base knit.

Recycled versus virgin polyester: what changes and what does not

For a sportswear buyer the practical difference between recycled and virgin polyester is documentation and sourcing, not performance. The table is the comparison we give buyers who ask whether switching changes their product.

We do not claim that recycled polyester is softer, stronger or cooler than virgin polyester; run to the same specification it performs as the same fabric. Where a buyer wants to check for themselves, a physical sample in the recycled fabric takes 5–7 days, is charged at sample cost and is credited against the bulk order.

Who asks for recycled polyester

Recycled polyester is requested most often by brands and institutions that have made a recycled-content commitment in writing and now need a supplier who can document it. The buyer types below are the ones that typically ask for it.

Buyers in these groups usually also need the export paperwork to line up with the claim, so the commercial invoice and packing list describe the fabric as recycled polyester. Regional pages for the UK and EuropeIrelandNew ZealandUAESaudi Arabia cover shipping and duties.

How to order recycled polyester garments

Ask for GRS recycled polyester in your first enquiry, name the garment and the standard fabric you would otherwise use, and ZipaSports confirms the recycled equivalent, its availability and the effect, if any, on the schedule in the quotation.

  1. Send your logo, design or reference and state that recycled polyester is required; the studio returns a free digital mockup within 24 hours with unlimited revisions.
  2. Approve a physical sample in the recycled fabric, 5–7 days, charged at sample cost and credited against bulk.
  3. Confirm label wording: the recycled percentage and, where the label rules allow it, the GRS mark on woven neck labels, printed size tags and hang tags.
  4. Bulk production runs 15–25 business days after design approval, with express production in 7–12 days at additional cost.
  5. Shipping is by air courier in 5–10 days worldwide or by sea in 3–6 weeks, with commercial invoice, packing list and certificate of origin, and GRS certificate copies on request.

MOQ is 20–25 pieces per design, lower on request, and there is no MOQ limit for sportswear brands. Payment terms and a full quotation are confirmed with your enquiry. Quality Guarantee: if any garment arrives with a manufacturing defect, we remake it free of charge — the remake goes into production within 3 days of your report.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is recycled polyester good for sportswear?

Yes, recycled polyester is used for sportswear at the same GSM and construction as virgin polyester, so a 140–180 GSM rPET interlock jersey wicks, prints and washes the same as its standard equivalent. The difference is the yarn's source and the GRS documentation, not the performance of the garment.

Does sublimation work on recycled polyester?

Yes, sublimation works identically on recycled polyester, because the dye bonds to the polyester polymer at around 200 °C regardless of whether the polymer came from recycled bottles or new resin. All-over prints, gradients, names and numbers and wash-fastness are unchanged from virgin polyester.

What does GRS certified mean?

GRS certified means the recycled content in a fabric has been verified under the Global Recycled Standard, a Textile Exchange standard, and tracked through every processing site by scope and transaction certificates. It also imposes social, environmental and chemical requirements on certified sites, so the claim covers more than the fibre percentage.

What GSM is recycled polyester jersey fabric?

Recycled polyester jersey fabric is 140–180 GSM in interlock, mesh or pin-dot mesh, the same as the standard sublimation jersey range. Piqué polos are 160–200 GSM, performance fleece 240–300 GSM and polyester-spandex leggings 240–300 GSM, all matched to the standard equivalent.

Can I put the GRS logo on my garments?

The GRS mark can be used on a product only when the garment meets the standard's labelling rules, including its recycled-content threshold and approved wording, and the claim is backed by transaction certificates through the supply chain. ZipaSports prints the recycled claim on labels and hang tags in line with those rules and supplies certificate copies on request.

Is recycled polyester more expensive than standard polyester?

Pricing for recycled polyester depends on the fabric, the quantity and the decoration, and it is sourced per order rather than held as stock, so it is quoted with your enquiry rather than from a list. Contact ZipaSports on WhatsApp with the garment and quantity for a quote within 24 hours.

Which garments cannot be made in recycled polyester?

Garments whose main fabric is not polyester cannot be made in recycled polyester: nylon-spandex leggings, seamless nylon-elastane knits and cotton pearl-weave gis fall outside it. In polyester-spandex and cotton-polyester blends only the polyester share is recycled, and the elastane or cotton is standard.

What is the minimum order for recycled polyester garments?

The minimum order is 20–25 pieces per design, with lower quantities possible on request and no MOQ limit for sportswear brands, the same policy as standard fabric. Because the recycled fabric is sourced against the order, we confirm availability and any effect on the schedule in the quotation.

Can you provide GRS certificates for my order?

Yes, certificate copies covering the GRS recycled polyester used in your order are available on request, alongside the commercial invoice, packing list and certificate of origin for export. Certificate numbers are not published on the website; ask for the copies with your enquiry or at order confirmation.
