How dye sublimation works
Dye sublimation is a four-stage process: the approved design is printed in reverse onto sublimation paper with sublimation ink, the paper is laid face-down on white polyester fabric, fabric and paper pass through a heated calender or flatbed press at about 200 °C, and the heat turns the solid dye straight into a gas that penetrates the polyester filament and locks in as the fabric cools. The word sublimation refers to that solid-to-gas change with no liquid stage. Because the dye is absorbed into the fibre rather than deposited on top, the printed area feels identical to unprinted fabric.

Why a sublimated print cannot crack, peel or fade
A sublimated print cannot crack, peel or flake because there is no print layer: the colour is part of the polyester fibre itself, in the same way the fabric's base colour is. Screen print, DTF and vinyl all add a film or ink deposit on top of the cloth, and any surface layer eventually cracks along fold lines or lifts at the edges. Sublimation dye has no edge to lift.
Fade resistance follows from the same fact. Once bonded inside the fibre, disperse dye is not removed by detergent, friction or repeated washing; it is protected by the polymer around it. ZipaSports runs wash-fastness and colour-fastness checks on sublimated fabric as part of in-line QC, which is why the factory can state the print will not fade, crack or peel over the life of the garment. The two real limits are ultraviolet exposure over years of outdoor use, which affects any dyed textile, and direct ironing at a temperature close to the transfer temperature, which can re-activate the dye. The recommended care is wash cold and do not iron the print.
Because the fabric surface stays open, a sublimated jersey keeps the full moisture-wicking and breathability of the base fabric, which a large screen print or transfer partly seals off.
Fabrics that take sublimation
Sublimation works on polyester and high-polyester blends on a white or light base. The dye only bonds to polyester, so print strength on a blend follows its polyester share, and the base colour shows wherever the design is white or pale. What you can print: all-over designs, gradients, names and numbers
Sublimation has no colour limit and no charge per colour, because the printer lays down every colour in a single pass whether the design has two colours or two hundred. That changes what a team or brand can afford to put on a jersey. Full-bleed patterns that run over the shoulders and down the sleeves, gradients that fade from one colour to another, photographic backgrounds, camouflage, marble and geometric fills all cost the same as a plain colour.
Names, numbers and sponsor logos are placed in the same file, so they are printed with the design rather than added afterwards. A squad of 18 different names is 18 print files, prepared by the studio from the buyer's roster spreadsheet, and the number font can be outlined, shadowed or filled with a gradient at no extra step. Sponsor logos sit exactly where the buyer marks them on the mockup, and because the print is under the fabric surface, a sponsor block never peels off a sleeve in the way a transfer can.

Pantone matching and mockup proofing
Colour is signed off twice: on screen, on the free digital mockup delivered within 24 hours, and then physically, on a printed strike-off checked against the Pantone reference before the bulk run. Buyers supply a Pantone number, a swatch or an existing garment; the studio sets the print profile to hit it and adjusts if the first strike-off is off. Unlimited free revisions apply to the mockup stage, so club colours, sponsor colours and gradients are settled before anything is printed.
Two facts about sublimation colour should be understood before approval. First, the transfer paper print looks dull and slightly wrong until it is pressed; the true colour only appears after the heat stage, which is why the strike-off is judged on fabric, not on paper. Second, the fabric colour is the white of the design, so an off-white base yields off-white highlights. White polyester is the standard base for that reason.
For a full pre-production check, a physical sample of the actual garment is made in 5–7 days at sample cost, credited against the bulk order. Minor shade tolerance between dye lots is normal across the textile industry and is stated in the Quality Guarantee so that it is not confused with a colour fault.
Limits of sublimation and how the factory works around them
Sublimation has four hard limits: it needs polyester, it needs a light base, it cannot print white, and it prints the panel, not the finished garment. Each has a standard workaround in the ZipaSports factory.

Quality control on sublimated prints
Sublimation faults are visible and specific, so QC checks for them by name after the strike-off, after pressing and after sewing. The press operator checks each panel for ghosting (a faint double image from paper shifting under the press), uneven colour from a moisture or pressure difference, and paper lines or creases transferred into the print. Colour is compared to the approved mockup and Pantone reference under daylight. Faulty panels are rejected before cutting.
After sewing, final QC checks that patterns and stripes match across seams, that names, numbers and sponsor logos are the right size and position for each player, and that measurements are within the approved size specification. Wash-fastness and colour-fastness are checked on sublimated fabric, and pre-shipment photos are sent on request.

Does dye sublimation fade after washing?
Dye sublimation does not fade after washing, because the dye is bonded inside the polyester fibre, so detergent and friction cannot reach it and there is no surface layer to wear away. ZipaSports checks wash-fastness on sublimated fabric during in-line QC. Wash cold and do not iron the print; years of strong sunlight are the only realistic cause of any colour change.
Can you sublimate cotton?
Cotton cannot be sublimated, because sublimation dye only bonds to polyester; on 100% cotton it washes out to a faint tint, and on poly-cotton it gives a muted vintage look. Can you sublimate a black or dark jersey?
A black or dark sublimated jersey is made by printing the black as part of the design onto white polyester fabric. Sublimation dye is transparent and cannot lighten a dark base, so the factory never sublimates onto pre-dyed dark cloth; the whole jersey, including the black body and any white lettering, comes from one print on a white base.
Are names and numbers included in the sublimation price?

What file format do you need for a sublimation print?
Sublimation artwork should be a vector file (AI, EPS, PDF or SVG) or a raster file at 300 dpi at final print size. Logos should be supplied separately as vectors so they stay sharp when scaled. If you only have a low-resolution logo or a sketch, the design studio redraws it as part of the free design service.
How accurate is Pantone matching in sublimation?
