What ripstop fabric is and how the grid works
Ripstop is a plain-weave fabric in which a thicker reinforcing yarn is woven in at regular intervals in both the warp and the weft, forming the visible square grid on the face of the cloth. The base cloth between the grid lines is ordinary plain weave; the grid is what gives ripstop its name.
The grid works by containing damage. When a puncture or cut starts in the base cloth, the tear runs only as far as the next reinforcing yarn and stops there, so a small hole stays a small hole instead of running the length of a trouser leg. This is the same principle used in parachute and sail cloth, scaled up to a heavier cotton yarn for garments.
Because the strength comes from the grid rather than from sheer thickness, ripstop delivers high tear resistance at a low weight, which is why 8–10 oz ripstop is the standard cloth for lightweight gi trousers and for summer-weight work trousers and shorts. Two trade-offs come with it: the base cloth has less abrasion resistance than a twill of the same weight, and the grid texture is visible in the finished garment, which suits technical and military styling but not every uniform.
What twill fabric is
Twill is a weave in which each weft yarn passes over two or more warp yarns before going under one, with the crossing point stepped along by one yarn on every row. That stepping produces the diagonal rib visible on the face of the cloth. Denim, chino cloth and drill are all twills; the notation 2/1 or 3/1 describes how many warp yarns each weft passes over and under.
The diagonal structure has three practical results for a garment. The cloth drapes more softly than a plain weave of the same weight, because there are fewer interlacings per square centimetre and the yarns can move against each other. Abrasion resistance is higher, because the long float on the face means the wear is spread across more yarn before a hole forms. And the diagonal surface hides soil and creasing better than a flat weave, which is why twill dominates work trousers, coveralls and aprons.

Woven trouser and workwear cloth is quoted in ounces per square yard, while knitted sportswear is quoted in GSM. The conversion is fixed: 1 oz/yd² is about 33.9 GSM, so the 8–12 oz range ZipaSports offers is roughly 270–405 GSM.

Weight is a trade between durability and comfort. Heavier cloth resists abrasion and lasts longer on a workshop floor or a mat, but it is hotter, slower to dry and adds weight at a competition weigh-in. A gi club in a hot climate will usually specify 8–10 oz ripstop; a workwear buyer supplying a fabrication shop will usually specify 11–12 oz twill. The GSM chart places these weights alongside every other fabric family.
Cotton vs poly-cotton ripstop and twill
Both weaves are available in 100% cotton or in a polyester-cotton blend, and the blend decision follows the same logic for a gi trouser as for a work trouser.

Workwear buyers whose garments go through industrial laundry almost always choose poly-cotton, because it survives repeated hot washing with less shrinkage, less fading and less creasing. Gi clubs split: poly-cotton for training trousers that must dry overnight, and cotton where a federation ruleset or the club's own preference requires it. Reinforcement points and construction

Trims are specified on the tech pack: metal or plastic zips, shank buttons, cord locks and drawstring cord, all sourced to the colour of the garment. Decorating ripstop and twill
Ripstop and twill are decorated by embroidery, heat transfer or screen printing, not by sublimation, because sublimation dye bonds only to polyester and these cloths are cotton or cotton-rich. The three methods suit different jobs.
