What polyester-spandex fabric is
Polyester-spandex is a knitted fabric made from polyester yarn with elastane (also sold as spandex or Lycra) knitted in, so it stretches and recovers along the length and across the width. The polyester carries the colour and the print; the elastane carries the stretch. Poly-elastane, poly-lycra and polyester-elastane are trade names for the same construction.
The blend matters to a sportswear buyer because of decoration. Sublimation dye bonds only to polyester, so a polyester-spandex knit can be printed all over in unlimited colours, while a nylon-spandex knit of the same weight cannot. A 300 GSM legging fabric and a 200 GSM rash guard fabric are both correct for their job. Specifying 300 GSM for a rash guard makes it hot and slow to dry under a gi; specifying 200 GSM for a legging makes it sheer at the seat under a full squat. If unsure, check the GSM chart for every garment.
Sublimation printing on polyester-spandex
Polyester-spandex takes dye-sublimation printing because at around 200 °C the polyester fibre opens and absorbs the dye as a gas, locking colour inside the fibre rather than on its surface. The print does not fade, crack or peel, and the fabric keeps its full stretch because there is no ink film sitting on top of the knit.
The elastane yarn itself does not take sublimation dye. On a dark all-over print, undyed elastane can show as faint white flecks when the fabric is stretched hard, most often at the seat and knee of a legging. Three things control it: printing on the correct heavy GSM, because a denser knit hides the elastane; keeping large solid black areas away from maximum-stretch zones where the design allows; and approving a physical sample worn under stretch, not a flat swatch.
Print is applied to the fabric flat, before cutting, so artwork is placed to the pattern. Stretch, recovery and squat-proof opacity
Recovery is the fabric's ability to return to its original dimensions after being stretched, and for leggings it matters more than stretch itself. A fabric that stretches easily but recovers slowly bags at the knee by the end of a session and grows at the waist over a few washes. Recovery comes from the elastane percentage and from how tightly the knit is constructed. Squat-proof opacity is a function of weight and knit density. At 240 GSM and above a polyester-spandex knit stays opaque when stretched over the body; lighter fabric begins to turn sheer at the seat. This is why the leggings range starts at 240 GSM, and why the lighter 180–220 GSM band of the same blend is reserved for garments that are not worn as a single lower-body layer: rash guards, swim tops and dance costumes.

The rule of thumb: if the garment is printed, choose polyester-spandex; if it is a solid colour and softness is the priority, choose nylon-spandex. Seams and construction for 4-way stretch
A 4-way stretch fabric needs a seam that stretches with it, or the seam breaks before the fabric does. The factory runs flatlock, coverstitch and overlock sewing lines for polyester-spandex garments, and the seam type is written into the tech pack per garment and per seam.
- Flatlock: the two fabric edges are butted together and joined with a flat multi-thread stitch, so no seam allowance stands inside the garment. Specified for rash guards, spats and compression wear, where a seam sits under a gi or against a mat and a raised edge would chafe.
- Coverstitch: twin needles on the face, looper thread on the back. Used for hems, waistbands and neck finishes because it stretches with the fabric and lies flat.
- Overlock (4-thread): the standard construction seam for leggings and swimwear where a flat seam is not required. Strong and fast, with the seam allowance inside.
