What denier means
Denier is the weight in grams of 9,000 metres of a single yarn, so it measures yarn thickness: a 600D yarn is thicker and heavier than a 420D yarn of the same fibre. 600D polyester versus 420D nylon
600D polyester is the standard choice for bag bodies; 420D nylon is chosen when weight matters more than body or when a panel must flex repeatedly. The fibres behave differently, so the denier numbers alone do not decide it.

Rule of thumb: 600D polyester for gym bags, kit bags, duffles and motocross pants shells; 420D nylon for lightweight backpacks, boot bags and panels that bend every time the bag is used. Mixing both in one bag is normal: a 600D body with 420D nylon side pockets.
PU coating, water resistance and laminated fabrics
Both fabrics are available with a polyurethane (PU) coating on the back, which fills the gaps between yarns so water beads on the face instead of soaking through. PU-coated 600D and 420D are water-resistant, not waterproof: rain runs off the panels, but water can still enter through needle holes at the seams and through the zip unless the seams are taped and the zip is covered by a storm flap, which is a construction choice rather than a fabric property. Specify the coating and the seam finish on the tech pack rather than assuming them.
Laminated fabrics go a step further. A film (PVC or TPU, in general terms) is bonded to the base cloth, giving a wipe-clean face and higher resistance to standing water. Laminated panels are offered for wet-kit compartments, boot-bag bases and the bottoms of duffles that get dropped on wet ground. Laminated cloth is stiffer, so it is used where it earns its place rather than for the whole bag.
Coated fabrics are cut with the coated side marked so every panel faces the same way, and the coating always faces the inside of the bag, where it is protected from abrasion.

Bar-tacks are the detail to ask any factory about: a dense block of zig-zag stitches at each handle root that spreads the load into the fabric. A bag with wrap-around webbing and bar-tacks carries its load through the webbing; a bag with handles stitched flat to the panel carries it through a few square centimetres of fabric and fails there first.

Decoration depends on the fibre. Because 600D polyester accepts sublimation dye, panels can be printed all-over before cutting, so a kit bag can carry the same pattern and colours as the team's sublimated jerseys. 420D nylon does not sublimate, so nylon panels are branded by screen printing or embroidery instead. On both fabrics embroidery of the club crest on the end panel or flap is the most durable branding: it cannot rub off and it survives being thrown into a van every weekend.

Motocross pants in 600D polyester
Motocross pants use 600D polyester as the shell because the seat, knees and inner leg are abraded by the saddle, the tank and the ground on every ride, and a knit or a light woven would wear through in a season.
