What nylon-spandex fabric is

Nylon-spandex is a knitted fabric that combines nylon (polyamide) with 12–20% spandex, the elastic fibre also sold as elastane or Lycra, to produce 4-way stretch. Nylon supplies the strength, smooth hand-feel and abrasion resistance; spandex supplies the stretch and the recovery that pulls the garment back to shape after every movement.

4-way stretch means the fabric extends and recovers both along its length and across its width. This is what lets a legging follow a squat, a lunge or a deep yoga pose without bagging at the knees or waist. Rash guards, compression tops, sports bras and dance costumes all need the same property.

Elastane percentage sets how far the fabric stretches and how firmly it recovers. Toward 12% the knit is stretchy but relaxed, suited to yoga and studio wear; toward 20% it holds the body with the firmer pressure expected of compression garments. The GSM chart for every garment shows how these weights compare with jerseys, fleece and the rest of the range.

What makes a legging squat-proof

A legging is squat-proof when the fabric stays opaque while stretched over the body at full flexion, and that depends on fabric weight and knit density more than on colour. At 240 GSM and above, a nylon-spandex knit has enough yarn per square metre that the loops do not open far enough to show skin when stretched across the seat and thigh.

Three things reduce squat-proofing: a fabric below the 240 GSM floor, a pattern with too little room in the seat so the fabric is over-stretched, and pale colours, which show through sooner than dark ones at the same weight. The fix for each is in the specification: hold the weight at 240–300 GSM, grade the pattern properly across the size range, and sample light colourways at the heavier end of the range.

The check itself is simple to run on the physical sample: stretch the fabric over a hand in daylight and look for skin tone, then wear-test it through a full squat and a forward bend. Once the sample passes, production fabric is held to the same weight, and finished measurements are checked against the approved size specification before packing so the fit that passed is the fit that ships.

Nylon-spandex vs polyester-spandex

Nylon-spandex and polyester-spandex are made at the same 240–300 GSM and 12–20% elastane, and the choice between them comes down to hand-feel and how the garment will be coloured. Nylon feels softer and cooler on the skin; polyester is the one that can be sublimated.

A practical rule: if the collection is built on solid colours with a small logo, specify nylon-spandex; if it needs prints, camo, gradients or all-over patterns, specify polyester-spandex. Many brands run both within one range and keep the same block pattern for each so sizes match across the collection.

Colours and decoration on nylon-spandex

Nylon-spandex is coloured by dyeing the fabric to a solid shade, and the factory matches that shade to any Pantone reference the buyer supplies. Because the colour is in the fibre, there is no print edge to wear off at seams or under a waistband.

Sublimation is not used on nylon because sublimation dye is designed to bond with polyester fibre; on nylon the result is patchy and washes out. If the design needs an all-over print, the correct move is to switch to polyester-spandex at the same weight rather than force a print onto nylon.

Surface decoration that works on nylon-spandex:

Keep printed areas away from the highest-stretch zones such as the seat and knee, where a large print block resists the stretch and can crack. A hip logo, a calf wordmark or a small back-waist mark are the positions that last.

Gusset, flatlock seams and waistband construction

Construction decides whether a nylon-spandex legging fits well and lasts, and the three details that matter most are the gusset, the seams and the waistband.

A gusset is a diamond or triangular panel sewn into the crotch. It removes the four-seam junction at the centre, which is where a legging without a gusset chafes and splits, and it lets the fabric move with the hips. A gusset should be specified on every legging and compression short in the tech pack.

Flatlock seams butt the two fabric edges together and cover them with a flat stitch, so there is no seam allowance pressed against the skin. They are the standard for leggings, compression wear and rash guards. Coverstitch is used for hems and waistband topstitching; overlock is used where a seam is hidden under a waistband or binding. Flatlock, overlock, coverstitch and lockstitch sewing lines all run in-house.

Waistbands are cut high-rise or mid-rise, either as a wide self-fabric band, usually doubled for a firmer hold, or with an internal elastic, with an optional hidden key pocket and drawcord. For sports bras the equivalent details are a lined front, an elastic underband, a racerback or crossback strap layout and removable pad pockets.

Sizes, fit and compression ease

Nylon-spandex garments are graded from a women's block in XS–4XL, a men's or unisex block in XS–5XL, and youth sizes on request, with fully custom size charts for brands that already have a house fit. Patterns are made and graded on computerised software so every size keeps the same proportions.

Compression garments are cut with negative ease: the pattern is smaller than the body measurement so the elastane stretches to hold the body. How much negative ease depends on the elastane percentage and the intended pressure, and it is confirmed on the physical sample rather than assumed. Yoga and studio leggings are cut closer to zero ease for a relaxed fit.

Because stretch fabric hides pattern faults until it is worn, it is worth approving one physical sample per block (legging, bra, top) before bulk. The sample takes 5–7 days, is charged at sample cost and is credited against the bulk order.
