What moisture-wicking means
Moisture-wicking is the movement of liquid sweat from the inside face of a fabric to its outside face by capillary action, where it spreads out and evaporates. The fabric does not absorb the sweat into its fibres; it carries the sweat along the tiny channels between fibres and yarns, the way a paper towel draws up a spill from the edge.
Capillary action works because water clings to a surface it can wet and pulls itself along by surface tension. A knit with a wettable fibre surface and fine, continuous channels wicks strongly; a knit with a water-repellent surface makes sweat bead and sit against the skin.
Spreading is the second half of the job. Sweat pulled to the outside face and spread over a wide area evaporates faster than the same sweat sitting in a wet patch, and evaporation is what cools the wearer. A good wicking jersey therefore feels drier on the skin and dries faster on the pitch and on the line.
Wicking is a different property from breathability, which is air and vapour passing through the fabric, and from waterproofing, which stops liquid altogether. We specify all three separately when a buyer's tech pack calls for them.
Why cotton absorbs and polyester wicks
Cotton absorbs sweat because cellulose fibre is hydrophilic: water enters the fibre itself, and the fibre swells and holds it. Cotton's moisture regain is around 8% of its dry weight, and a wet cotton T-shirt holds far more than that in the spaces between fibres. The result is a heavy, cold, clinging shirt that dries slowly.
Polyester absorbs almost nothing; its moisture regain is below 1%. Water cannot get into the fibre, so it stays on the fibre surface and in the gaps between fibres, where capillary action can move it and air can evaporate it. That is why polyester dries fast. Bare polyester, however, is hydrophobic: sweat beads on it instead of spreading. A wicking finish or a modified fibre cross-section is needed to make the surface wettable, and that is the difference between a cheap polyester shirt that feels clammy and a sportswear knit that wicks.

How the wicking finish is applied
A wicking finish is a hydrophilic chemical treatment applied to polyester fabric at the mill's finishing stage, after dyeing or heat-setting and before the fabric is rolled for cutting. In general terms the fabric is passed through a bath of the finishing agent, squeezed to a controlled pick-up, dried, and then cured with heat on a stenter so the agent bonds to the fibre surface. The treated polyester becomes wettable: a drop of water sinks in and spreads rather than beading.
Two other routes add wicking without a finish. Some polyester yarns are spun with a grooved or channelled cross-section, which builds the capillary channels into the fibre itself. Knit structure also matters: a mesh or pin-dot mesh has open holes that speed evaporation, and a fine interlock has a dense, even channel network that spreads sweat well.

How long the finish lasts
A mill-applied wicking finish is durable through normal wear and washing but not permanent; it declines gradually over many wash cycles rather than failing at once. The rate depends on wash temperature, detergent and, above all, fabric softener.
Fabric softener is the main reason wicking garments stop working. Softener coats fibres with a waxy, water-repellent film, which is the opposite of a wicking finish, and one or two washes with softener will make a wicking jersey bead water. Care instructions for wicking kit should therefore say no softener, and clubs handing kit to a laundry should pass that on.
Sublimation printing does not harm the finish. Sublimation-grade polyester is finished to withstand the heat of the calender or flatbed press at around 200 °C, and the dye enters the fibre beneath the finish, so a fully sublimated jersey wicks the same as a plain one. Screen prints and heat transfers block wicking only under the printed area, which is why large solid chest prints are often swapped for sublimation on hot-weather kit.
To keep the finish working: wash cool, use a normal detergent, skip softener and bleach, and line dry or tumble dry low.

Choosing GSM for hot climates
For hot and humid climates, choose the light end of the jersey range: polyester mesh or interlock at 140–160 GSM, with mesh panels at the sides, underarms and upper back. A lighter knit holds less sweat by weight, has less fabric between skin and air, and dries faster between drinks breaks.
Between 160 and 180 GSM the fabric gains opacity, a heavier drape and better recovery from stretch, which is why most club jerseys are specified there. In the UAE and GCC, Australia and the southern USA, a full mesh body at 140–150 GSM is a common specification for summer football and cricket.
Three points weigh against the lightest option. Very light white or pale fabric can be sheer when wet, so a 150 GSM white jersey is often lined at the chest or moved to interlock. Sublimation colour looks deeper on a denser knit. And a lighter mesh snags more easily in contact sports, so mesh is kept to non-contact disciplines or to panels.
