What a first fightwear drop looks like, and how it is ordered

A startup fightwear brand's first order with ZipaSports is normally one gi, one rash guard, one pair of shorts and a hoodie, each at the 20–25 piece minimum per design and each split across sizes. That is enough stock to photograph, to seed a home academy and to sell online, without holding a warehouse.

Ordering runs mockup, sample, bulk. Gis, rash guards and shorts are separate designs, so each carries its own minimum; a black-and-white colour variant of the same rash guard may or may not count as a new design depending on the artwork, and the quote says which. BJJ gis: pearl weave 350–550 GSM, ripstop trousers, A0–A5 sizing

The gi jacket fabric is the main decision for a fightwear startup. ZipaSports cuts gi jackets from pearl weave cotton or poly-cotton at 350–550 GSM, with single weave as the lighter alternative, and trousers from 8–12 oz ripstop or twill. Within the pearl weave range, the weight changes how the gi trains and who it suits.

Sizing follows the industry convention of A0 to A5 for adults, with long (A-L) and heavy (A-H) variants, a women's F range and children's M sizes where the brand needs them. You can adopt those conventions with the factory's chart or send your own measurements.

Cotton shrinks in a hot wash. Specify pre-shrunk fabric or cut with shrinkage allowance, and wash the sample before you approve it so the measurements you sign off are post-wash. The BJJ gi fabric guide goes deeper on weaves, collars and reinforcement.

Rash guards and spats: 180–220 GSM, flatlock seams, sublimated

Rash guards for a startup are made in polyester-spandex or nylon-spandex at 180–220 GSM with flatlock seams, in long-sleeve, short-sleeve and women's cuts. Polyester-spandex is the default because it takes full-garment sublimation: the artwork is dyed into the fibre across the whole panel, so ranked stripes, sponsor art and all-over designs do not crack or peel under gi friction.

Spats use the same 180–220 GSM cloth for a light no-gi layer, or the heavier 240–300 GSM compression fabric when the brand wants a squat-proof legging that doubles as training wear. Both are sublimated as one design with the rash guard so the set matches.

Competition colour rules matter here. Most grappling federations require a ranked rash guard to show the competitor's belt colour in a set proportion, and restrict which colours are allowed on the mat. Check the current rulebook of the federation your customers compete under before you sign off the artwork, and keep a plain white or black variant for the buyers who train no-gi only. Shorts: satin for the ring, interlock and stretch for the cage

Fight shorts split into two families. Boxing, muay thai and kickboxing shorts are cut from polyester satin, which holds embroidery well and gives the sheen buyers expect. MMA and grappling shorts are cut from polyester interlock or microfibre and from stretch fabrics that can be sublimated all over. ZipaSports makes all of them in Sialkot, Pakistan.

Fight-team hoodies, walkout tees, bags and accessories

The pieces that sell to people who never step on the mat are the hoodie and the tee, and they are the easiest part of a first drop. Fight-team hoodies are made in cotton-polyester fleece at 280–350 GSM with a brushed back, decorated by embroidery, puff print or screen print. Walkout tees use polyester interlock at 140–180 GSM for a sublimated design, or a cotton-rich tee for a screen-printed logo.

Gi bags and kit bags are made in 600D polyester or 420D nylon with a reinforced base, embroidered or printed with the brand mark, and are worth adding to the second order once the garments have sold. Socks, gloves and other accessories are listed on the accessories pages and are quoted on request alongside the garments, so include them in the enquiry if the range needs them.

Patches and embroidery vs sublimation: branding that survives training

Fightwear branding has to survive grip, friction and hot washes, so the method is chosen per garment rather than per brand. The matrix shows what ZipaSports runs on each piece.

On the gi, decide the patch layout before the mockup: shoulder, back, chest, lapel and trouser positions all have federation-permitted zones, and a patch placed outside them can be refused at a competition check. Keep one version of the gi mockup with patches and one without, so a plain training variant is ready when a customer asks for it.

Sizing, labels and packaging

Cut-and-sew fightwear at ZipaSports is graded in adult XS–5XL, women's XS–4XL and youth sizes, and gis in the A0–A5 convention or to the brand's own chart. Send a size chart if you have one; if not, the factory chart is used for the sample and adjusted from your measurements of it. Tolerance against the approved chart is ±1–1.5 cm, and that figure is what a size claim under the guarantee is checked against.

Labels are part of the order, not an extra supplier. A gi takes a woven label on the lapel or inside the collar and a printed size and care label in the trousers; rash guards and shorts take a woven or tagless printed neck label and a size tag; hoodies take both plus a hem label if the brand uses one. Hang tags, branded polybags and boxes complete the retail pack. Care labels must state fibre content and country of origin for the UK, EU, USA, Canada and Australia, and for a cotton gi the wash instruction is the difference between a fit that lasts and a shrink complaint.
